AI in Kitopia
Переглядів 87День тому
Artificial intelligence will neither solve all our problems nor likely destroy the world, but it could help make our lives better if it’s both transparent enough for everyone to understand and available for everyone to use in ways that augment us and advance our goals - not for corporations or government to extract something from us and exert power over us. Imagine a future, for example, in whi...

Collaging, remixing, sampling-art always has been more than the sum of its parts, a synthesis of elements and ideas that produces something new and thought-provoking. Technology has enabled and advanced this enormously, letting us access and manipulate information and images in ways that would’ve been unimaginable just a few decades ago. For Nettrice Gaskins, this is an essential part of the Af...

Chronicling Online Communities

From Napster to UA-cam, some of the most important and controversial uses of the internet have been about building community: connecting people all over the world who share similar interests, tastes, views, and concerns. Big corporations try to co-opt and control these communities, and politicians often promote scary narratives about technology’s dangerous influences, but users have pushed back...

Building a Tactile Internet

Blind and low-vision people have experienced remarkable gains in information literacy because of digital technologies, like being able to access an online library offering more than 1.2 million books that can be translated into text-to-speech or digital Braille. But it can be a lot harder to come by an accessible map of a neighborhood they want to visit, or any simple diagram, due to limited av...
Right to Repair Catches the Car

If you buy something-a refrigerator, a car, a tractor, a wheelchair, or a phone-but you can't have the information or parts to fix or modify it, is it really yours? The right to repair movement is based on the belief that you should have the right to use and fix your stuff as you see fit, a philosophy that resonates especially in economically trying times, when people can’t afford to just throw...

Imagine an internet in which economic power is more broadly distributed, so that more people can build and maintain small businesses online to make good livings. In this world, the behavioral advertising that has made the internet into a giant surveillance tool would be banned, so people could share more equally in the riches without surrendering their privacy. That’s the world Tim Wu envisions...

A company called Clearview AI has scraped the internet to gather (without consent) 30 billion images to support a tool that lets users identify people by picture alone. Imagine a world in which the internet is first and foremost about empowering people, not big corporations and government. Excellent discussion, kind of rapid, complex. I think the web should attract independent minds and enable them to think more as a community (of independent minds, rather than pressured conformity), and I think that independent minded users will always pursue that pathway, so long as it's made available. Thank you!

    As much as I would like to see the comeback of repair shops, I have to wonder about the economics. Can you really repair a $60 pressure washer, profitably? In the end, I have probably parted out and recycled more things than I have been able to actually repair. Always interesting and fun to try, however! 😎✌️

    • @l0gic23
      @l0gic23 2 місяці тому

      Probably depends on the issue. My $60 pressure washer ended up trashed because I could not get the hose replaced... The hose!!! It wore out from rubbing on the ground. In would have rather paid a living wage to someone who could get a new hose to stay on it then to re-buy the same garbage or pay more, at that point, for something else that might develope a similar problem.... Actually, I'd be fine if there was not cheap option if the things would perform well and were not designed to fail for normal usage.... For normal ware and tare, I would love to treat it as a precocious vacuum cleaner or TV of the past and get it fixed... Looking at my cheap dishwasher and wondering if it's worth the time/effort vs replacing with another cheap dishwasher... Of there was a place I could drop and and pick it back up with honest work completed, I'd much rather pay a living wage for that

    This is a violation of civil constitutional and human rights. Their selling out the squares for the ability to loophole the constitution. And the squares are the majority and would rather sell their souls instead of slowing down and looking out for people in the crosswalk. THEY DONT DO ANY HIT AND RUN CRIME SOLVING WITH LPRS AND FACIAL RECOGNITION THEIR FAILING TO NOTIFY THEY ARE USING. Because beyond a reasonable doubt means they need the registered owner in the car to prove it was them that committed the offense. They take mug shots of every criminal to update their profile and be able to identify the criminal from the noncriminal and delete the data from squares? NO! Your failing to see the big PICTURE THEY NEED TO DO THEIR JOB AND STOP USING VIOLATING PRACTICES policies the kill injure or track everyone cheating stealing going to the bar the casino and everything you like to eat and everything you do. Keeping your facial image in a government database should be considered a search, and should require a warrant under the 4th amendment. I know when we are in public we do not expect privacy. But keeping records of our comings and goings is creepy. It is a power we should not cede to the government. Power corrupts. It is the road to dictatorship.

    this is exactly why we need people from the humanities , in tech. SOME semblance of an ethics board. laws are there, and need to be there, to nip business in the bud when they are on track to cannibalize the people of the country. to allow safe navigation for the people of the country from being controlled. government & business SERVE the people, they ought not rule over the people. government is a facilitator, business is a a pool of resources at a convenience.

    I don’t understand why super interesting pages and super essential matters of life (and science)get so few views. It’s like they are sort of cursed. It’s why books are so inexpensive and cars or technical appliances are so costly. Essential knowledge seems to be despised (and even willingly ignored). The “high IQ” argument would sound a bit discriminatory. But I don’t really understand all this. PS, THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR WORK. I’M SURE YOU SAVED THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE'S LIVES.

    It sucks to see EFF become like ACLU and exclusively focus on Leftist concerns. Much of the worst violations of bodily privacy came with COVID, yet it is unmentioned. This organization used to appeal to a broad spectrum of individualists and privacy seekers. Now it is increasingly limiting its appeal to the Left which, in general, is turning on privacy rights in America. This is not the early 2000's. The Right has a large congtingent of anti-surveillance, limited government advocates. The Left is becoming the Bush era police state advocate Don't alienate potential allys and donors by ignoring conservative concerns for privacy.

    • @OddWoz
      @OddWoz 3 місяці тому

      A TikTok ban is all about Israel and their propaganda not sticking. Congress couldn’t care less about your private data and potential manipulation, as long as the Alphabet Boys get the access they want. If Congress cared at all about the issues they claim, they’d pass data protection and privacy legislation that applies to all. Don’t fall for it. Gifting TikTok to Steve Mnuchin would only serve to make matters worse-he’s already proven that he’s even less trustworthy than ByteDance/China. Not to mention TikTok learned it all from FB, Amazon, and Google. TikTok is currently the only major platform left that’s not beholden to the Alphabet Boys and that’s serving as a counterbalance to complete hegemony… the only major platform immune to the censorship/suppression of everything except the U.S. govt’s “pre-approved” narratives. I don’t even use TikTok-but it’s important enough to defend from this kind of overreach. This is a red herring.

    Threats Posed by ALPR ALPR is a powerful surveillance technology that can be used to invade the privacy of individuals as well as to violate the rights of entire communities. Law enforcement agencies have abused this technology. Police officers in New York drove down a street and electronically recorded the license plate numbers of everyone parked near a mosque. Police in Birmingham targeted a Muslim community while misleading the public about the project. ALPR data EFF obtained from the Oakland Police Department showed that police disproportionately deploy ALPR-mounted vehicles in low-income communities and communities of color. Moreover, many individual officers have abused law enforcement databases, including license plate information and records held by motor vehicle departments. In 1998, a Washington, D.C. police officer “pleaded guilty to extortion after looking up the plates of vehicles near a gay bar and blackmailing the vehicle owners.” More recently, an officer in Kechi, Kansas was arrested on suspicion of accessing a Flock Safety ALPR database to stalk his estranged wife. In addition to deliberate misuse, ALPRs sometimes misread plates, leading to dire consequences. In 2009, San Francisco police pulled over Denise Green, an African-American city worker, handcuffed her at gunpoint, forced her to her knees, and searched both her and her vehicle-all because her car was misidentified as stolen due to a license plate reader error. Her experience led the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to rule that technology alone can’t be the basis of such a stop, but that judgment does not apply everywhere, leaving people vulnerable to similar law enforcement errors. More recently, in Aurora, Colorado a group of Black youths were traumatized by police after an ALPR system incorrectly identified their vehicle as stolen. Aggregate data stored for lengthy periods of time (or indefinitely) becomes more invasive and revealing, and it is susceptible to both misuse and data breach. Even Customs & Border Protection, arguably the largest and best funded law enforcement agency in the U.S., saw its ALPR vendor, Perceptics, hacked and data published online. Sensible retention limits, specific policies about who inside an agency is allowed to access data, and audit and control processes could help minimize these issues. One of the better privacy protections would be for police to retain no information at all when a passing vehicle does not match a hot list. Automated license plate readers can also be used to target immigrant communities and people seeking or providing reproductive health services.
